How Much Paint for a Hallway?
Hallways are long but narrow, and full of doors. The doors matter more than the length.
A typical hallway — about 4 feet wide and 14 feet long, with four doors — needs 2 gallons of paint for two coats. That is less than most people expect for a corridor that length, and the reason is the doors: each one removes 21 square feet of wall.

Count the doors — all of them
This is where hallway estimates go wrong. A hallway is wall-to-wall doorways, and every door is 21 square feet you do not paint.
Walk the hallway and count carefully, including doors you might overlook:
- Bedroom and bathroom doors
- Closet doors — often two per closet if they are bifold or sliding
- The door at each end of the hallway
- Any linen cupboard or utility door
A hallway with four doors loses 84 square feet of wall. On a narrow corridor that is a substantial fraction of the total.
Hallways are the cheapest room to paint, and the most awkward
The paint is cheap — usually 2 gallons covers a whole hallway. The job is not.
Narrow corridors mean ladders block the space, cutting in around multiple door frames takes far longer per square foot than in an open room, and there is rarely anywhere to put a tray down. Budget the same time for a hallway as for a bedroom three times its floor area.
Hallways also take more wear than any other space in a house — hands, bags, furniture being moved. Use a satin or eggshell finish rather than a flat one so it can be wiped.
