How Much Paint for a 14x14 Room?
The counter-intuitive answer: a 14x14 room and a 12x16 room need exactly the same paint.
A 14x14 room with 8-foot ceilings needs 3 gallons of paint for two coats. And here is the part that surprises people: so does a 12x16 room. They have different floor areas — 196 against 192 square feet — but the same perimeter, and paint follows the perimeter.

Why the shape does not change the paint
A 14x14 room has a perimeter of 56 feet. A 12x16 room also has a perimeter of 56 feet. Multiply either by 8-foot ceilings and you get 448 square feet of wall.
The floor areas differ — 196 against 192 square feet — but you are not painting the floor. You are painting the walls, and the walls only care about the perimeter.
Push it further: an 8x20 room has a floor of only 160 square feet, a fifth smaller than the 14x14, and still needs the same 3 gallons. This is the single most common mistake in paint estimating.

Walk the room and add up the wall lengths, or measure two adjacent walls and double the sum. Then:
- Multiply by the ceiling height.
- Subtract 21 square feet per door and 15 per window.
- Multiply by the number of coats.
- Divide by the coverage on the can, and round up.
